Hamas and Islamic Jihad Respond to US Ceasefire Proposal: A Step Towards Ending Gaza Conflict or Another Roadblock?

Hamas reacts to proposed US ceasefire plan in Gaza

Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad have responded to the US proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza war, expressing their commitment to work towards an agreement that will end the conflict. In their joint statement, they emphasized the need for a complete halt to the ongoing aggression against the Gaza Strip and prioritized the interests of the Palestinian people.

However, anonymous sources suggest that Hamas made changes to the proposal, rejecting President Biden’s idea of releasing hostages as presented in his plan. The White House is currently reviewing Hamas’ response to the proposal. Meanwhile, efforts by Egypt and Qatar to mediate an agreement between Israel and Hamas continue. President Biden’s three-stage plan for a ceasefire includes releasing Israeli hostages and eventual reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has promoted this plan during his recent trip to the Middle East, receiving support from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Despite ongoing efforts, a lasting agreement has yet to be reached.
