Hyundai and Kia’s Dominance in EV Category: 2024 World Car of the Year Results Released

At the New York Auto Show, the Kia EV9 takes home the 2024 titles for World Car of the Year and World Electric Car.

In recent years, the Hyundai Group has been dominating prestigious vehicle awards, particularly in the electric vehicle category. Kia and Hyundai vehicles have swept major titles at the World Car of the Year competition in both 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 took home multiple awards, followed by the Hyundai Ioniq 6 in 2023. This year, Kia made a comeback with the EV9 winning the 2024 World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle awards. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N secured the World Performance Car title.

Judged by a panel of one hundred automotive journalists from 29 countries, vehicles competing for the main prize must have production exceeding 10,000 units annually, be available in at least two major global markets, and be priced below luxury options in their regions. The EV9 beat out competitors like BYD Seal and Volvo EX30 for the top title.

In addition to winning multiple awards in several categories, including electric vehicle and performance car titles, Kia’s EV9 also surpassed its rivals like BMW i5 and Volvo EX30 in terms of luxury features and performance. The BMW i5 was recognized as a world luxury car while Volvo EX30 was awarded world urban car title. Other notable winners included Toyota Prius for world car design of year award which came as a surprise among finalists such as Ford Bronco and Ferrari Purosangue.
