Last Chance for Nevada County Businesses to File Property Statements without Penalty

Assessor Encourages Businesses to Submit Business Property Statement to Prevent Penalties

Business owners in Nevada County have only a few weeks left to file their Business Property Statement with the Assessor’s Office. The filing period is open from January 1 through April 1, with May 7, 2024, being the last day to submit without a penalty.

Businesses can choose to file their statements electronically or by submitting a paper form. Those who receive a notice to file letter from the Assessor must either eFile their statement or fill out and return a paper statement. Additionally, any business that owns Personal Property and/or Fixtures worth more than $100,000 must submit a Business Property Statement, even if not requested by the Assessor.

Electronic filing offers several benefits, including saving time and resources by carrying forward prior year acquisition cost information each year. Once businesses enter this information into the system, they will receive confirmation that their statement has been successfully filed. Notice to file letters were sent out in late January with all necessary information for electronic filing.

For those choosing to file a paper statement, businesses can download a paper Business Property Statement through the e-filing web portal if they have received a notice to file letter. It is important to note that all information, including prior year costs, must be entered on the form each year. Paper forms must be filled out, signed, and postmarked or delivered to the Assessor’s Office by May 7 to avoid a penalty of 10%.

Business owners who have questions or need assistance with resending notice to file letters or any other concerns can visit the Business Property webpage or contact the Assessor’s Office at business.property@nevadacountyca.gov or 530-265-1259 for help.
