Putin Accuses Ukraine of Moscow Attack; Four Suspects in Custody as Russia Faces Criticism over Torture Allegations

Putin Blames Ukraine and “Radical Islamists”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused Ukraine of involvement in the terrorist attack near Moscow that resulted in at least 137 casualties. During a televised meeting on Monday, Putin stated that the crime was committed by radical Islamists. However, he also mentioned that the shooting could be part of a broader intimidation campaign aimed at Ukraine.

After several days of investigation, four suspects are now in custody for their role in the attack. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov initially avoided commenting on the serious injuries sustained by the men, which appeared to be a result of torture by Russian security forces. The Russian judiciary ordered pre-trial detention for three more individuals involved in the attack, bringing the total number of terror suspects in custody to seven.

The Basmanny District Court of Moscow made the decision to detain the additional suspects on Monday. Out of the eleven suspects arrested after the attack, four main perpetrators appeared before a judge on Sunday evening. Despite multiple claims by Islamic State that they were responsible for the attack, Putin and other Russian officials have continued to accuse Ukraine without presenting evidence. The White House dismissed these claims as Kremlin propaganda, emphasizing that the attack was carried out by fighters from ISIS terrorist militia.

The alleged torture of the suspects by Russian security forces drew condemnation from human rights activists. Russia’s human rights association “Komanda protiw pytok” (Team Against Torture) criticized the use of violence and harassment against those suspected of involvement in terrorism attacks, stating that torture could lead investigations astray and increase societal willingness to use violence itself. They also noted that such actions were an attempt to divert attention from Russia’s failure to prevent such attacks prior to this incident. As 97 injured individuals continue their treatment in hospitals, it remains unclear what will become of those who remain at large or who have fled Russia entirely after this tragic event unfolds in Moscow region.

In response to this horrific incident, flowers were laid by grieving individuals at an improvised memorial site as a tribute to those who lost their lives during this terrorist attack near Moscow.

It is worth noting that while some sources claim that ISIS may have been behind this particular incident, there is no concrete evidence linking them directly yet and further investigation is needed.
