Scarlett Johansson Joins Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic World Reboot: What We Know So Far

Scarlett Johansson in Negotiations for Role in Universal’s ‘Jurassic World’ Film Directed by Gareth Edwards

In recent news, two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson is in talks to join the Gareth Edwards-directed Jurassic World reboot at Universal. The project has been circulating for some time, but it appears to be quite solid. This new endeavor puts Johansson in business with another major movie franchise, following her successful run as Black Widow at Marvel.

The production is moving quickly to assemble the project for a July 2, 2025 release. David Koepp, who adapted the first Jurassic Park from Michael Crichton’s classic novel, is penning the latest iteration of Jurassic World. The new movie promises to take a fresh approach to the Jurassic era, but cast members from previous Jurassic World films, such as Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, are not expected to return. Original trilogy actors Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neill are also not expected back for this new installment.

Jurassic World will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Entertainment, with Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley producing through Kennedy-Marshall. EVP Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the production at Universal. The franchise has been around for over 30 years and has grossed $5.67 billion at the global box office. The original 1993 film directed by Spielberg was followed by two sequels – The Lost World (1997) and Jurassic Park III (2001). In 2015, Universal revived the franchise with Jurassic World and continued with Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Dominion (2022).

Johansson’s casting in this new project comes after she was nominated for Best Actress for Netflix’s Marriage Story and Supporting Actress for Searchlight’s Taika Waititi-directed JoJo Rabbit in 2020. She is now circling Jurassic World after being reported first by InSneider.
