In a surprising turn of events, it was reported by Bild newspaper on Tuesday that teenager Andrea Kimi Antonelli will be taking over for seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025. The 17-year-old driver has reportedly reached a deal with the German team, replacing Hamilton who will be moving to Ferrari next season. This move has sent shockwaves through the F1 world.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff mentioned during an interview at the Canadian Grand Prix that they have not yet made a decision for next year, ruling out current Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz. Wolff praised Sainz’s performance but indicated that they are looking to reinvent themselves in the future and see a role for Kimi Antonelli in their plans.

Antonelli, who has skipped Formula 3 and is currently competing in Formula 2, is a part of the Mercedes junior academy. He has also had the opportunity to test old Mercedes cars, showcasing his potential as a future F1 driver. Hamilton has expressed his belief that Antonelli would be a good successor, though he remains unsure about the specifics of Mercedes’ plans. He mentioned in a previous statement that if he were in charge, he would likely choose Kimi for the role.
