The Potential Return of Stephon Gilmore to the Panthers: A Closer Look

Report: Panthers have made contact with Stephon Gilmore

Stephon Gilmore, a 33-year-old veteran cornerback, may be returning to the Carolinas as the Panthers have reportedly reached out to him about rejoining the team. Gilmore played for Carolina during the latter part of the 2021 season after being traded by the Patriots for a sixth-round pick. During his time with the Panthers, he appeared in nine games with eight starts, recording 16 total tackles and two interceptions.

After his stint with the Panthers, Gilmore signed a two-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts and started in all 16 games in 2022. In 2023, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys where he also started in all 17 games, playing 94 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. Gilmore has played for several teams throughout his career including the Bills, Patriots, Colts, and Cowboys. In total, he has played in 165 games and has recorded 140 career passes defensed along with 31 interceptions.

Gilmore is ranked at No. 51 on PFT’s list of top 100 free agents. A potential return to the Panthers could bring a valuable veteran presence to their secondary. While it remains uncertain if a deal will come to fruition, Gilmore’s experience and skill set could be a valuable addition to the team if he decides to make a return.
