UN Special Rapporteur Escapes Attacks Amid Calls for Investigation into Alleged Genocide by Israel in Gaza

UN Special Rapporteur for Palestine Faces Threats Over Report of “Genocide” in Gaza

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, has revealed that she received threats for her report on the signs of “genocide” committed by Israel against the Palestinian population during the military offensive in Gaza. Despite these threats, Albanese stated that she remains committed to her work and believes the evidence is significant.

Albanese mentioned that attacks against her have been ongoing since the beginning of her mandate. She emphasized that human rights work is about amplifying the voices of those who are not heard. While criticism may anger her, it only motivates her to continue her important work.

Albanese expressed surprise at the lack of response from many Western states to her report, indicating their stance on the issue. She affirmed that her role is to ensure that member states comply with international law and believes that her report may expose what she calls “humanitarian camouflage” regarding Israel’s actions.

In a report presented on Monday, Albanese provided evidence to support the claim that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian population. The criteria for this assertion include murder of group members, infliction of serious harm, and deliberate actions causing physical destruction.

Albanese’s dedication to her work despite threats and criticism highlights the importance of upholding human rights and international law in conflict zones like the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
